Moving an innovation from niche to mainstream
Every sustainable breakthrough starts as “niche.”
A green hydrogen technology for transport.
An ultra-low-carbon material for construction.
A bio-based fibre for fashion.
On the surface, they couldn’t be more different. But they all face the same challenge: moving from “alternative” to “mainstream.”
Engineering breakthroughs don’t sell themselves. A pilot plant, prototype or a new material doesn’t magically create a market. Growth comes when the brand, the story and the strategy are in lockstep and create momentum — in other words, you need a brand people can believe in and a story that attracts partners, talent and investment.
This was a challenge I faced supporting pioneers in green hydrogen transport and bio-based materials for fashion and construction. Brilliant technologies, full of potential, but battling the perception that they were novel and just “niche”.
To validate that these were scalable, I anchored my work in:
• Clear positioning — why they exist and who they serve
• Consistent messaging — every touchpoint reinforcing trust
• Proof points — pilots, partnerships and people that show traction
• A growing footprint — digital presence, media profile and investor comms that kept pace with the science
• Balance — resisting the temptation to overclaim, and focusing instead on evidence and human stories that built trust without hype
Below are my top ten principles that make a difference when building and scaling sustainable innovation. This is how niche ideas cross into mainstream markets.
Define your “why” early - if people don’t get that you exist, they won’t care about what you’ve built.
Own your positioning: Pioneer, partner or challenger - choose it. If you don’t, the market will.
Build credibility through proof points: Pilots, partnerships, awards, media - every win counts as traction.
Tell human stories: Faces and voices build trust faster than prototypes and data.
Lose the jargon. If your audience can’t explain it back to you, the message hasn’t landed.
Align brand and business development: Disconnected messaging = lost time and missed deals.
Balance ambition with restraint. Big vision, yes. Over claiming, no. Credibility is fragile.
Showcase ROI as well as values. Sustainability opens doors. But ROI seals the deal.
Be consistent. Every channel, every pitch, every post. Same story, reinforced.
Protect momentum. Hard won, easily lost. Once momentum disappears, it’s twice as hard to restart.
